Before you connect

Telewish links two browsers directly — no server relaying your messages. Your chat is encrypted twice: once by WebRTC's built-in DTLS, and again with a fresh AES-256 key derived from the passphrase you speak to each other.

Your IP address is visible to the other person.A direct connection means their device sees your network address — the same as a video call. Use a trustworthy no-log VPN if you want to hide it.
No one is moderating this.There's no company, server, or report button behind Telewish — anything said here is between the two of you alone.
Only connect with people you trust.The code and passphrase together are the keys. Share each half over a different channel — one on a screen, the other spoken aloud.
Nothing is saved unless you ask for it.By default, closing the tab ends the conversation for good. You can opt in to keeping chats on this device only — they never leave your machine.
Use a VPN for maximum privacy.A VPN hides your real IP from your peer and from the STUN server used for the handshake. When both sides use a trustworthy no-log VPN, the other person sees only the VPN's address. This is the strongest simple upgrade — and unlike a relay, it adds almost no latency.

I understand this is a direct, unmoderated connection, and I'll only connect with people I trust.

Telewish splits the connection code in half: one half is a code (QR or text), the other half is a short passphrase you share through a different channel. Both halves are needed — and they also salt the AES-256 key that encrypts every message on top of DTLS.

Use a strong word passphrase On When on: 5 dictionary words + numbers, like "raven 37 amber 12" — easier to read aloud and much harder to guess. When off: a short 8-character password like "king1625" that's quicker to type and say, but noticeably weaker.

Want to hide your IP? Use a VPN. A no-log VPN hides your real address from the other person without slowing the connection down the way a relay does. Turn it on before you start the chat — both of you, ideally.

Works on most home and mobile networks. Very restrictive corporate or school firewalls can occasionally block the direct connection.

Have a relay server? Use a short room code instead

Quick connect

Uses a small relay server just to pass the handshake between you two — it only ever sees connection metadata, never your messages, which stay direct and encrypted once connected.
